Activity 3

The movement of beaches along the coastline is called Longshore Drift. The waves move towards the beach at an angle, which is caused by the wind. The waves moving up the beach drop transported sediment on the beach, this is known as the swash. The waves then move back down the beach, called the backwash, taking the beach sediment with it. Longshore drift occurs in a zig-zag pattern, meaning that the beach gradually moves along the coastline.
