Erosional Features

These are the main features found on the coastline which have been formed by the process of erosion. To find out more about erosion visit the processes page.

Cave

cave

Caves are erosional features found in some coastal areas. They are holes found in cliffs, and are formed when the sea erodes away the weaker parts of the cliff face.

Stack

stack

Stacks, too are erosional features found on coastlines. They are lumps of rock out to sea, just off the coast. They are formed when arches collapse.

Arch

arch

Arches are erosional coastal features. They are holes through the cliff, forming something that looks like a bridge. They are formed from the further erosion of caves.

Bay

bay

These are common features in coastal areas, where the land curves inwards along the shoreline. This is caused by the sea gradually eroding away the land.
